Epoch 7 - The Climate Round

Introducing epoch 7, our first Climate Epoch.

gm gm,

Since we started Octant, we've been deeply thinking about how to sustainably fund projects and ecosystems. We started with public goods because open-source projects, especially the ones in Ethereum, are vital to the type of internet and world we want to see: decentralized, open, and positive-sum.

To date, we've run 6 epochs and funded over 65 projects in our epochs with over $6M in funding. For Epoch 7, we're excited to announce an important milestone in our journey, our first themed epoch, the Octant Climate Epoch in partnership with Climate Coordination Network (CCN).

🌍🌡️ Why climate and why now?

Because it's timely, it's pressing, and let's be real: if not now, when?

We're all affected by climate, and the best time to be part of the solution is now. Creating a resilient and sustainable planet is collective responsibility, and this round is about doing our part to tackle one of the greatest challenges of our time.

Climate action aligns deeply with our values, and this epoch marks the beginning of more experiments with themed rounds in addition to our traditional epochs, in the future.

đź’ˇ Are we climate experts?

We're not. But we’ve partnered with Climate Coordination Network (CCN), whose mission is to accelerate climate solutions globally. They believe that climate action is the ultimate Public Good because it addresses an existential threat that affects everyone.

The CCN team knows their stuff. They’ve been leading climate funding rounds since 2021, starting with Gitcoin’s GR12, where they launched the first Climate Solutions Round. Since then, CCN has decentralized its efforts and has managed to crowdfund over $1M and distribute more than $4.5M in funding to hundreds of web3 projects tackling climate change.

đź’š Why this round matters?

This epoch is not just about funding; it’s a key step in our bigger vision for Octant v2—a protocol that will enable ecosystems to sustainably fund their communities, bring utility to tokens, and most importantly, pool resources to support essential public goods. Of course, if you've attended our town halls and community calls, then you probably know this!

V2 fully brings Octant on-chain. For this round, we’ll trial aspects of v2 with new mechanisms designed to support high-quality donors while sustainably funding projects. But funding is only the beginning. Over the next year, we’ll provide mentorship, resources, and programs to help these projects succeed long-term. We’ll also work with independent impact evaluation experts to understand the tangible outcomes of our support.

đź’ť What does this mean for you as an Octant user?

This round will look a bit different:

  • Instead of a Snapshot vote, projects will be hand-selected by CCN based on their expertise and understanding of what’s needed to address climate change.
  • The Allocation period remains the same, you'll allocate the way you would in a regular epoch. The only change here will be the projects participating.
  • What’s new is that this epoch will serve as a testing ground for new tools and processes behind-the-scenes, making the experience even better for both donors and projects.
  • We will switch back to regular programming with Epoch 8 being a traditional epoch funding open-source projects and public goods, albeit with improvements on v2.

Rewards for users will stay the same as in past epochs—so no changes there! We'll share more with you as our team cooks up more behind-the-scenes.

What's next?

We're hosting Twitter Spaces with CCN next Wednesday at 12 pm EST with more details on the round and what to expect. Join us here.
